Fri, 11/21: 2:00 PM – 3:15 PM

Room: Astoria – 3rd Floor
Dr. Carole Barbato, Emeritus Professor of Communication Studies at Kent State University at East Liverpool, died unexpectedly last spring. Carole taught in the Kent State system since 1974. Carole’s enthusiasm for research is parallel to her effectiveness as a teacher as evidenced by student testimonials and the Ohio Communication Association Distinguished Teaching Award she received in 2006. She was a long-time member of the National Communication Association and studied small group communication, team building and interpersonal communication motives.

Teacher, scholar, and social activist, Carole was willing to share her expertise beyond the boundaries of her own academic domain. She and her colleagues were instrumental in designating the site of the May 4, 1970, Kent State Shootings as a National Register of Historic Place by the United States Department of the Interior. Their efforts also culminated in the May 4 site Walking Tour and the May 4 Visitors Center.

Panel participants will highlight Carole’s contributions to communication scholarship, the scholarship of teaching, and the legacy of May 4th at Kent State. Professor Scott Myers will comment on how Carole’s work served to undergird current research on team building, group communication, and the study of interpersonal communication motives. Professor Paul Haradakis will speak about her work to develop and support undergraduate and graduate students at Kent State University. Professor Laura Davis will present Carole’s passionate efforts to preserve and share knowledge about the events surrounding the May 4th shootings at Kent State.
