OHIO COMMUNICATION ASSOCIATION EXECUTIVE BOARD OPPOSES HARMFUL SENATE BILL 83 AND HOUSE BILL 151

The Ohio Communication Association (OCA) Executive Board STRONGLY OPPOSES Ohio Senate Bill 83 and its counterpart House Bill 151. These bills are an attack on academic freedom at Ohio universities and colleges and will harm students and institutions of higher education in Ohio, which consequently will negatively impact Ohio’s economy.

These bills claim to promote intellectual diversity and freedom of speech but simultaneously dictate how faculty present content in their courses and the ways that certain “controversial topics” are covered. SB 83 and HB 151 also restrict instruction of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) at public and private institutions of higher education in Ohio. Restricting the discussion of important and/or controversial issues in classrooms will limit relevant learning opportunities, leaving students unprepared to enter the modern workplace as critical thinkers who can analyze, discuss, and make decisions related to cultural, environmental, and social issues. These bills also limit labor rights among faculty and staff at public colleges and universities.

The OCA STRONGLY ADVOCATES for academic freedom and the types of faculty protections that SB 83 and HB 151 would directly harm. The Ohio Communication Association is one of the oldest state associations of communication academics and professionals in the nation. The mission of the Ohio Communication Association is to promote excellence in communication scholarship and practice within the state of Ohio and beyond. The organization seeks to create inclusive spaces for meaningful and sustained connections among diverse stakeholders to facilitate academic and professional development.
